Taking the guesswork out of dissolution

Sometimes the most valuable upstream technologies don’t involve big sexy rigs or artificial intelligence. In a world in which every single cost and resource decision receives operational and economic scrutiny, sometimes the most exciting tech is simply behind-the-scenes stuff that helps better manage risk. Case in point: Our new Wellbore DNA program.


Collaborative Risk Management

At Magnum Oil Tools, we’ve always prided ourselves on working with operators to help select or develop the absolute perfect completion technology for the job. Now we’re going beyond shared project data to actually performing firsthand analysis of the environment in which our tools will be deployed. Specifically, Magnum is analyzing customer water samples to help determine the dissolution rates of dissolvable frac plugs with unprecedented accuracy.


Fluid Intelligence Gathering

Participating in the Wellbore DNA program is easy. Customers can either collect a water sample (minimum 15 ounces), or call Magnum Oil Tools and schedule a technician to come collect a sample for them. Once Magnum receives the water sample, our in-house technicians use state-of-the-art lab technology to measure dozens of water sample parameters, including:

  • Salinity/Alkalinity
  • Sodium
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Choloides
  • Potassium
  • Barium
  • Hardness
  • Conductiviy
  • Sulfates
  • Specific Gravity
  • Bicarbonate

We even perform measurements on various attribute indices such as the Langelier Saturation Index, the Skillman Index, the Stiff & Davis Stability Index and the Larson-Skold Index. Some of these metrics are more important than others when considering dissolution rate and predictability, but the important thing is that we have a clear understanding of the tool’s chemical operating environment. Most of this data will be revelatory to some extent, especially given things like scale inhibitors, biocides, friction reducers, etc. that are often added during pump-down and fracking operations.


Data-Driven Dissolution Estimates

Magnum engineers then combine this chemical analysis with temperature and other well data to determine or confirm the customer’s choice of completion tool, as well as deliver a more accurate prediction of dissolution time. Most tool providers merely guesstimate this rate, forcing the operator to hope the OEM is correct. But by providing hard data and historical modeling, the Wellbore DNA program is taking dissolvable predictability to new levels.
